The Librarians
Directed by Kim A. Snyder | USA, 2025 | 88 minutes
As an unprecedented wave of book banning is sparked in Texas, Florida, and beyond, librarians under siege join forces as unlikely defenders fighting for intellectual freedom on the front lines of democracy.
Librarians emerge as first responders in the fight for democracy and our First Amendment Rights. As they well know, controlling the flow of ideas means control over communities.
In Texas, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQIA+ stories – triggering sweeping book bans across the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate, librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide to lay bare the underpinnings of a large-scale coordinated extremist movement fuelling the censorship efforts. Despite facing harassment, threats, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work – the librarians’ rallying cry for freedom to read is a chilling cautionary tale.
While the film focuses on events occurring in the United States, recent incidents in Manitoba demonstrate that we are not immune to attempts at censorship. Specifically, school board meetings in Brandon and Carman have provided a platform for presentations calling to ban books featuring 2SLGBTQIA+ characters and families, conflating education about the queer community with pornography and pedophilia. We are also seeing educators push back, and it's time to join them in taking a stand against the extremist takeover of our education system.
Join us for this urgent and timely documentary film screening.
